In year of wonders, we watch anna undertake a quest of self-discovery she learns about herself, redefines her relationship to the world, and ultimately rejects the limitations that society places on women. There was something in her that could not  see the distinctions that the world wished to make between weak and strong, between women and men, laborer and lord (2242) both anna and elinor are aware of the skewed power dynamic between men and women. 'year of wonders', examines the diverse responses adversity invokes in people, and the positive and negative responses they exhibit as a result as the trajectories of the horrendous plague, afflicts the entire village of eyam, anna frith transpires as an unforeseen healer and heroine, proving that her year of tragedy and catastrophe evolved to become a 'year of wonders.
John's actions are indicative of what many women suffered during accusations of witchcraft: labeling a women a witch gave men an excuse to abuse and degrade women for sinning this theme of violence against women appears multiple times in year of wonders.
